How to create this Instagram profile photo and headshot that Pops! (using Canva)

It’s no secret that the first impressions make a big difference. When someone sees your profile picture online, they’re going to form an opinion of you at that moment.

If you’re trying to attract new followers, it would be great for your Instagram profile picture to be eye-catching and as memorable as your daily content.

A great profile picture is one that pops out at people when they scroll through their feed, drawing them in.

It also needs to be clear enough so that people can see who you are right away..

I was recently asked about my profile photo and decided to help you get your profile photo updated like mine, perhaps I shouldshow you how to create an Instagram profile photo that pops kind of like the one I’m using on my own Instagram account.

For this design, you can use your Canva account to create your profile photo.

To start, click on “Create a Design” and find the Square Instagram post template. It will open a blank template much like this one.

Choose any photo that you’ve taken of yourself, preferably one that’s straight on. I’ve added this image here of myself, and what I’m going to do is turn it into something that looks better with an on-brand background color.

To get this look, go ahead and remove the background of your photo, and you’ll do that by clicking on edit photo and click on background remover. This step is a pro feature of Canva you can try here.

If you don’t have pro that’s okay, you can just go to a site like remove bg.

Once you have your transparent background image on your uploads inside of Canva, you can insert it on a canvas of your color choosing and put your new transparent photo on top of it to create a headshot with a solid colored background.

Download this image and upload it to your uploads file on Canva. At this point you should have one solid color background PNG and one with a transparent background.

The next step is to clear your canvas so that it’s a white canvas again, and this time you’re going to go over to the elements tab and locate the frames section and click on see all.

Look for the circle frame that has an outer circle like this one. This is going to be your profile frame. You can change this outer color to anything you want.

Then, go back to your uploads and drag your profile picture with the solid color background into the frame. It’s not going to look quite right just yet.

What we want to do now is scale this photo up much larger so that your head sort of overlaps the top circle and it’ll look something like this below.

Then, place a frame over the top like this and insert your transparent profile photo over the top. You will need to make adjustments and scale it so that it’s the same size as the image behind it.

At this point, your head should overlap the outer circle and look like it’s popping out of the image!
