7 Types of Instagram Stories That Build Trust With Your Audience
This post may contain affiliate links. Please read the disclaimer

If you’ve ever opened Instagram Stories and thought, “What am I supposed to post today?” you’re definitely not the only one. It’s easy to feel like every Story needs to be creative, exciting, or perfectly put together. Somewhere along the way, a lot of business owners started believing they had to document every moment of their day or constantly have something new to announce.
The reality is much simpler than that.
The Stories that build the most trust usually aren’t the flashiest ones. They’re the ones that give people a better sense of who you are, what you do, and why they should keep coming back. You don’t need a brand-new idea every day. You just need a handful of Story types you can rotate through whenever you’re not sure what to share.
Here are seven that work well no matter what kind of business you have.

1. Share Something Helpful
One of the easiest ways to earn someone’s attention is to leave them with something useful. A quick tip, a checklist, a common mistake, or a simple shortcut is often enough to make someone think, “That was actually helpful.” (It doesn’t have to be a long tutorial or a masterclass squeezed into a few Story slides.)
A good place to start is with the questions you hear most often. If customers regularly ask how something works, what you’d recommend, or where to begin, that’s probably a great Story. You don’t have to teach everything you know. Just help someone solve one small problem today.
Story ideas:
- A quick tip or tutorial
- A checklist people can screenshot
- A common mistake to avoid
- A simple workflow or process
- A template or resource
- A sneak peek of something you’re creating

The Story ideas in this article are pulled directly from the Instagram Story templates inside the Ivory Mix Membership. Members get new Story templates, post ideas, captions, and content kits every month, making it easy to always have something ready to share.
2. Start a Conversation
Sometimes your stories are simply an opportunity to start a conversation and not also about giving information.
Think Polls, quizzes, sliders, and question boxes give people an easy way to interact with your business while also helping you learn more about your audience. Instead of asking broad questions like, “Ask me anything,” give people somewhere to start.
Story ideas:
- Poll: Which option would you choose?
- Quiz your audience on a fun fact
- “What’s your biggest challenge with…?”
- “What are you working on today?”
- “Which topic should I cover next?”
- This or That
- Emoji slider

3. Show the Person Behind the Business
People connect with people. That’s why some of the most memorable Stories have nothing to do with your business or selling. They’re the morning coffee before work, the notebook full of ideas, the dog sleeping under the desk, or the project that’s halfway finished. Those ordinary moments help your business feel a little more human.
You don’t have to share your entire personal life online. Just let people see enough to remind them there’s a real person behind the account.
Story ideas:
- Your morning routine
- Coffee before work
- Your workspace
- A messy desk
- Your pet
- Behind-the-scenes of your workday
- A favorite business tool
- A day in your life

4. Share Customer Wins
Some of the best stories come from the people you’ve already helped in the form of screenshots, results, etc. If a customer leaves a thoughtful review, tags you in a post, shares a result, or sends a kind message, don’t let those moments disappear into your inbox. Share them.
Social proof helps people picture themselves working with you, and that’s much more powerful than simply saying your product is great.
This is one of my favorite Story categories to create, which is why you’ll find dozens of ready-to-customize “Free Value” Story templates inside the membership where you can simply grab a template, customize one and post it.
Story ideas:
- Customer testimonials
- Screenshots of kind messages
- Before-and-after examples
- Client transformations
- Customer photos
- Milestones you’ve reached together
- Reviews from Google or Etsy

5. Talk About What You Sell
It’s easy as a business owner to worry we’ll sound pushy if we talk about our products too often. The reality is that people can’t buy something they don’t understand or ever hear about. So, use your Stories to explain why your offer exists, who it’s for, what problem it solves, or what someone can expect after purchasing.
It’s important to remember you’re not making these stories to try and convince people. Most of the time, it’s simply helping the right person recognize they’ve found the solution they were looking for.
Story ideas:
- Why you created your offer
- Who it’s perfect for
- The problem it solves
- FAQs
- What’s included
- A customer success story
- Behind-the-scenes of your product
- A simple call-to-action

6. Share Your Progress
People enjoy seeing things come together. That’s why it’s worth sharing the process instead of waiting until everything is finished.
Maybe you’re writing a blog post, designing templates, organizing your office, packing orders, or planning next month’s content. Those moments remind people your business is active, growing, and always creating something new.
Progress also builds anticipation. When people see what you’re working on today, they’re more likely to come back tomorrow.
If coming up with polls and question boxes on the spot feels difficult, that’s exactly why they’re included in the membership Story templates. The prompts are already written, you simply personalize them for your business.
Story ideas:
- Writing today’s blog
- Designing new products
- Planning content
- Packaging orders
- Working with clients
- Crossing tasks off your list
- Office organization
- Preparing for a launch

7. Invite People Into the Process
One of the easiest ways to make your audience feel connected to your business is to involve them in what you’re creating.
Ask which cover they prefer, which product should launch first, what topic they’d like next, or which design catches their attention. These Stories are quick to create, increase engagement naturally, and help people feel like they’re part of your business instead of simply watching it.
Story ideas:
- Vote on two designs
- Choose your next blog topic
- Pick a product color
- Help name a new product
- Which cover would you click?
- Which caption sounds better?
- What would you like to learn next?
