Make a Dreamcatcher (with passion & intention)

how to make a dreamcatcher

In a sort of symbolic way, I decided to teach myself how to make a dreamcatcher and get it done at the beginning of this year. The significance is to mark the beginning of something (this creative endeavor and blog). When I was a pre-teen and teenager, I had dream catchers bought from a store or a craft fair hanging near my futon and lava lamp on top of the night stand. They were cool then when I was trying to fulfill my hippy artist dreams as a kid. They quickly lost their appeal for some reason at the age of 15 – perhaps because I was “older” and more mature than to believe in such things. Perhaps it was because I thought it was childish to believe in dreams like being an artist and that only action, organization, and success were the answer to my happiness.

I’ve since learned my lesson – here’s why….

You’re dreams can become reality when your intentions becomes action.

Make your intentions and actions all about your true happy and passion filled goals and dreams and they can come true. (yes really). No amount of money or certain level of success brings happiness if they are not tied to your true passions.

You see, a dream catcher and the meaning and symbol behind it come from the traditions of some Native American tribes, where good dreams and bad dreams float above you, and with the aid of a dream catcher, the bad ones stick in the web and the good ones flow on to you during slumber. It’s a lovely thought – true or not – it’s all that I want for 2016. Good. Passion filled. Dreams.

So, in honor of our creative dreams – let’s make the good ones come true with hard work, intention, and action. My hope for us it that they don’t remain dreams, but become reality when the sun rises on your results from this year. 🙂

I spent less than $20 at Hobby Lobby on this supply list. DIY your very own dream catcher and then let me know what you’re dreams are for this year!

How to make a Dreamcatcher supply list:

  • Metal Dream Catcher Ring ($3 or less for one)
  • Scrap Cloth and ribbon ($6 or less)
  • Thin yarn or hemp string ($3 or less)
  • Glass or metal beads ($2 or less)
  • glue (hot glue + hot glue gun) – already owned
  • twig or short branch – free from my yard
  • fuzzy yarn or feathers – $6 – $7 ouch! but I had a 40% off coup making this $5 or less

Steps for how to make a Dreamcatcher:

  1. Cut strips from multiple colors of fabric / ribbon into 1″ wide x 1 yard long pieces
  2. Wrap one or two of your strips around the metal ring and secure the ends with glue
  3. Lay the twig or branch across the middle at a unique angel using the thin thread or hemp string to secure and tie knots around each end to the metal ring
  4. String a few beads across the ring in unique angles that criss-cross eachother
  5. Secure the rest of your ribbons to the bottom of your ring and then cut and trim the bottom of them in a V-shape.

Certainly the best post i’ve read today.
Thank you for this post Kayla Marie, I connected with it in so many ways. I am the biggest dreamer out there and I wish I could lay my hands on a dream catcher this side of the atlantic. Could you send one to me?
