Do girl bosses inspire you like they do me? It’s like every where I turn, another smart lady is killing it online with their entrepreneurial goals. Today, I’ve got a special treat. Moniek James has a lot of experience making her dreams come true and running with her ideas. I hope you find her as inspirational as I do and show some support by following her on Twitter or shouting out to her on Instagram.
What keeps you busiest these days?
Well, I own and operate three businesses, so between those responsibilities and family life my days are pretty full. Among my businesses, the most recent one to be added is my personal brand, Moniek James, and that has majority of my focus right now since it’s less than 6 months old. I mentor other entrepreneurs and small business owners on using technology and modern marketing to launch and grow their business so I’m building courses and hosting live workshops in my area.
How did you get started as an online entrepreneur and how long have you been doing this?
I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2010, my first business was event planning and still exists today, although I scale back during certain times of the year. My entry into the online business world started in 2013 when I began selling women’s fashion tops (I resist calling them t-shirts) online for my bog, The Confetti Collective
What’s been the biggest success and why do you think out of everything it’s the thing that has been most successful?
My biggest success (so far) was working with the hospital in my area when they opened their new facility. I worked with them on 8 of 10 grand opening events and considering my family had only lived here for 2 years at the time, I consider that a huge win for for me and my business and really helped to establish my event planning company, Distinctive Soirees as one that can work with large corporations and the local Food Court Wars winner…that was fun too.
What are your favorite tools you use to grow your business?
I rely heavily on social media and blogging to grow my businesses. One of the core mindset shifts that I teach my students and clients is to use their blog and social media platforms as tools – every post and article should have a purpose that ties back to their business home, which is the website.

I just love that you offer guidance to different types of online entrepreneurs and also offer services to help! Where does all of your personal and professional inspiration come from?
I am such a huge nerd, I’m always reading and consuming stuff…I read EVERYTHING. Not long after the Army moved my family to southern Arizona I noticed business owners in my area struggling with tools and finding resources and information to grow their business. I think that my professional and entrepreneurial journey has been so varied and all over the place that I have a wide pool of experience to pull from and use to help others.
What’s something that people might not know about you but that you don’t mind sharing?
I was a Korean linguist in the Army, and I don’t know how to skate.
What does the future hold for you?
If I have anything to do with it, my future holds the local and virtual team that will help me scale my businesses and serve more people. My recently launched #BabyStepstoGreatness School will become the place for tech newbies and business owners that need help figuring out the how to sell their what. The future is gonna be awesome.
Last question: What is your favorite blog or business to follow and why?
I really like Social Media Examiner because they’re always at the leading edge of what’s going on in the world of social media. Even if they post about something that I already know about I still read their post to get a different perspective. I also like Foundr Magazine’s blog because they share such insporational stories of entrepreneurs kicking butt in their industry. Both also have podcasts so when I’m not able to read I can listen to episodes while I’m driving, doing laundry or whatever.
