How to Choose a Digital Product Idea

If you’ve ever thought about creating a digital product, you’ve probably considered it because of the benefits it could bring to your lifestyle. Passive income is a dream for many people who want to make money from home, and digital products are one of the best ways to do this.

However, it’s not as easy as just creating a product and selling it.

First, you need to come up with an idea for a digital product that people will actually buy.

So, if passive income is the dream, what are you going to make and sell?

The truth is that there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

But what can help is getting clearer on what problems your ideal customers are having, why your potential customers might need a new digital product in the first place—and whether they’ll be willing to pay for it.

Know your Niche and Customer

The first step in creating a digital product is to identify your niche.

If you don’t have a niche, it’s time to find one. You can do this by brainstorming different topics that interest you and then narrowing down those topics until they are specific enough to be useful for others. For example, if you’re interested in gardening, that might be too broad of a niche. Instead, you could focus on container gardening or organic gardening. If your niche is too broad, it will be hard to create an audience around it and make money from it.

You should have an interest in this niche and preferably some knowledge or skill in it.

You can also use this niche to help you identify the problems that need to be solved. For example, if you’re interested in helping people lose weight and you know a lot about nutrition and exercise, then your niche could be “weight loss for busy people with no time to cook healthy meals.”

You should have a clear idea of who your ideal customer would be in this niche and an understanding of the common struggles people have regarding this topic.

This will help you create your content and find products to create around a specific problem people have, not just a general topic. This way, when someone searches for that keyword or phrase on a platform like Pinterest or Google, they will see your digital products first because it’s more focused and specific to them and their specific struggles.

come up with digital product ideas and pick a niche

It helps to work backward—to start with the needs of your customer and then drill down into how you can deliver value—when creating digital products

If you want to create a digital product, it helps to start by thinking about what you’re good at and what other people might needs first to get help with that.

Ask yourself:

  • pick a niche – Ask “What am I skilled or knowledgeable at?”
  • pick an ideal customer – Who buys products in this niche and what do these people need help with most?
  • discover their pain points – Ask “How can I make their life easier?” or “what are they complaining about most”
  • come up with digital product ideas – ask “How can I help them solve a problem they have with a digital product?”

Look at what your customers are asking for.

Once you have your niche and know more about your potential customers and their common struggles, it’s time to start looking at what your customers are asking for. This is one of the most important steps in the process, because by looking at what people are searching for, you can get a better sense of how many people have this problem and what they’re specifically looking for.

People are always asking questions in google and luckily, you can access and use tools like answer the public to help you discover what it is they’re asking for help with.

For example, you might know that you have skills and knowledge related to losing weight. So, your first keyword search might be “weight loss”. And in the answer the public tool, you may find that people are searching “how can I make weight loss easier?”. That means they’re struggling with losing weight and don’t know where to start. You could create a product around that.

But, if you’re seeing questions come up like “best weight loss supplements”, then they’re likely trying to find a supplement that works and you could create an ebook or course around that.

Pick the questions you know you can answer and solve the problem with a digital product.

Understand how you can solve your ideal customers problems or make their lives easier.

It’s tempting to come up with a digital product idea first and then work out how to sell it and who to sell it to later. But if you do this, you might find yourself wasting time on products that aren’t actually solving any real problems people are willing to pay money for and you may have no potential customers to even sell to.

Instead, take time to understand the problem and whether people will pay to solve it before coming up with a solution.

Think about how you can solve your ideal customers problems or make their lives easier – not how you can create a digital product.

Don’t worry about what the product is, just focus on how you will solve their problem, or make life easier for them in some way.

  • Example: If you’re an event planner, and you have a lot of experience with venue selection, maybe you create a downloadable resource that helps planners quickly find the best locations for their events.
  • Benefit: It solves problems for the customers because they’ll save a lot of time in searching for and choosing one venue over another – and time is money!

Keep it simple.

Have many digital product ideas? Create a product outline or blueprint to help you stay on track with one product at a time and keep it simple.

The more complicated you make your product, the more likely it is to fail. Keep your product simple and focus on solving one problem well.

Break down the ideas into a series of steps and use an outline to keep track of what you’ve already done and what’s left to do.

Use an outline to help you plan your time and resources, as well as stay focused on the task at hand.

Create a minimum viable product first

Once you have a clear idea of the problem and how to solve it, try to come up with a minimum viable product (MVP) version of your product. This is the simplest possible version that can solve the problem.

It should be something that customers can use right away – even if they don’t pay you anything yet.

Once you have an MVP, start testing it with customers to see if they’ll actually use it. This is where you can find out if people really want your product, or whether there are other solutions that might be better.

Create a digital product in a format you enjoy making

Creating a digital product can be a lot of work, especially if you don’t enjoy writing or designing. If this is the case, it might be worth thinking about something else that you enjoy doing more.

If you love writing, try an ebook or email course instead.

If you have good design skills and enjoy graphic design, consider making an templates using tools in Canva or Photoshop.

If you love filming, speaking and editing videos, try making a short video course or tutorial.

Look at what your competitors are doing.

If you’re looking for ideas, take a look at what your competitors are doing. Look at their products and services as well as any marketing they’ve done.  What is their customer experience like and what are their customers raving about or complaining about? What do customers say about them? Do they appear to be making any mistakes or having any problems with their product or service offerings?

These are all opportunities where you might do better or maybe could simplify something.

Take note of all of these things, but don’t just copy what other businesses are doing—think about how you can improve the digital product idea that you’re seeing.

It’s okay to charge for a simple template.

For example, If you’re good at making great PowerPoint templates, then there’s no reason to give them away for free!

There are plenty of businesses out there that would pay a pretty penny for something they can use over and over again—and the more people who use it, the more valuable it will be.

Templates may be a very easy product to create, but it definitely has value in today’s marketplace.

Your first digital product choice doesn’t have to be permanent

You can use your first digital product as a way to build up your personal brand and learn more about who wants what type of information from you before deciding on what format they’d like best (PDFs vs eBooks vs Online Courses).

The most important thing is that you create something that people want. If you can do that, then you’ll have no problem making sales and generating revenue from your digital product.

Conduct surveys and polls to get more product ideas

Customer feedback is a great way to identify new product ideas.

When you’re trying to find new product ideas, you can use customer feedback as a way of getting people involved in the process. This can be done by asking questions on social media or by sending out surveys through email like on a google form or typeform.

You’ll want to make sure that your survey is short and simple so that people don’t get bored answering it.

Customer feedback can also be used to improve existing products. Ask your customers what they would like to see in your product and how you can make it better. You can also ask them if there are any features they would like to see added or removed. This will give you an idea of what customers want, which can then be used as inspiration for new products.
