10 Content Idea Lists Every Business Needs
This post may contain affiliate links. Please read the disclaimer

If you’ve ever opened Instagram, stared at the screen, and thought, “I have no idea what to post today,” you’re definitely not alone.
The funny thing is, most business owners don’t actually have a content idea problem.
They have a content organization problem.
Over the years, I’ve noticed that content gets much easier when you stop relying on inspiration and start building lists instead.
Instead of trying to think of something clever every time you need content, you can simply pull from a collection of ideas you’ve already organized.
In fact, most of my content planning starts with a handful of simple lists that I revisit over and over again.
If you’re tired of starting from scratch every week, these are the content idea lists I would create first.
Before We Start: Grab 700 Content Ideas
If planning content feels impossible because you’re constantly running out of ideas, I have something that will help.
I created a free library with more than 700 content ideas that you can use across your blog, email list, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube.
What I love about this resource is that it isn’t meant to give you 700 things to post this month.
It’s meant to give you a starting point.
In fact, you could easily pull a handful of ideas from the library and use the lists in this post to organize them into months of content.
Make sure you Download this list of 700+ content ideas for your next content creation session!
Then keep reading because I’m going to show you the lists I think every business should have.
List #1: Your Core Topics List
This is the first list I would create because everything else builds from it.
Think about the 3 to 5 topics your business talks about most often. These are the subjects you want to be known for and the things your audience consistently needs help with.
For example, if you help business owners create content, your list might include:
- Content Planning
- Content Ideas
- Repurposing Content
- Email Marketing
- Content Organization
If you’re a health coach, your list might include:
- Nutrition
- Movement
- Mindset
- Healthy Habits
- Stress Management
Whenever you’re stuck, this list gives you a place to start.
If you’re currently staring at a blank page wondering what to write about, the good news is that content ideas are usually easier to find than people think. I shared my process in 4 Steps to Create 50 Content Ideas, which walks through a simple way to generate a large bank of future content topics.

List #2: Frequently Asked Questions
One of the easiest ways to come up with content is to pay attention to the questions people ask.
I think a lot of business owners overlook this because the questions seem too simple. But if one person is asking, there’s a good chance many others are wondering the same thing.
Start keeping a running list of:
- Client questions
- Email replies
- Instagram DMs
- Facebook group questions
- Comments on your content
These questions can become blog posts, emails, videos, carousels, and Story content.
List #3: Tutorials and How To Content
This list comes directly from your expertise.
Think about all the things you know how to do that your audience is still trying to figure out.
For example:
- How to plan a month of content
- How to create a lead magnet
- How to organize content ideas
- How to write an email newsletter
- How to repurpose a blog post
This list tends to become some of your most valuable content because people are actively searching for solutions.

List #4: Common Mistakes and Myths
One thing I’ve noticed is that people love content that challenges what they believe to be true.
That’s why I always keep a list of:
- Common mistakes
- Popular myths
- Bad advice
- Things people think they need to do
- Things that actually work
Some examples might be:
- Why you don’t need to post every day
- Why more content isn’t always the answer
- Why complicated marketing plans often fail
- Why consistency looks different than people think
These posts naturally create curiosity because they help people see things differently. This idea comes directly from one of my favorite content brainstorming exercises where I look for myths, objections, and assumptions around a topic.
List #5: Personal Stories and Lessons Learned
Some of the best content you’ll ever create won’t come from teaching.
It will come from your own experiences.
I keep a running list of:
- Things I’ve learned
- Things I’ve changed my mind about
- Mistakes I’ve made
- Wins I’ve had
- Surprising results
People connect with stories because they help them see what’s possible and often make your content feel more relatable than a list of tips ever could.
List #6: Client Wins and Success Stories
If you work with clients or customers, this list can become a goldmine.
Start collecting examples of:
- Problems people solved
- Results they achieved
- Transformations they experienced
- Lessons they learned
- Questions they asked before getting started
These stories help people see how your advice works in real life.
And if you don’t have clients yet, use your own experiences instead.
List #7: Content Frameworks and Lists
This is probably one of my favorite categories.
I’ve noticed that people love content that takes a messy topic and organizes it into something simple.
Some examples include:
- 5 mistakes
- 7 steps
- 10 ideas
- 3 types
- 12 examples
- 4 content categories
Frameworks are easy to consume, easy to save, and easy to come back to later.
In fact, this entire blog post is built around a framework.
List #8: Audience Goals and Aspirations
Most content focuses on what people are struggling with.
But some of your best content can come from thinking about what people actually want.
Ask yourself:
- What are they trying to achieve?
- What would success look like?
- What would make their life easier?
- What would they love to stop worrying about?
Those answers often become strong content topics because they connect directly to the outcomes your audience cares about.
List #9: Content Ideas About Your Offer
A lot of business owners accidentally separate their content from their products.
Instead, I like to keep a list of content ideas that naturally connect to my offers.
For example:
- Why I created the membership
- What’s included this month
- How members use the content kits
- Frequently asked questions
- Common misconceptions
This makes promotion feel much more natural because you’re simply talking about problems your offer helps solve.

List #10: Future Content Ideas
This might sound obvious, but it’s probably the most important list on this entire page.
Every time you have a content idea, save it.
Don’t trust yourself to remember it later.
Create one place where you collect:
- Blog ideas
- Email ideas
- Story prompts
- Video topics
- Interesting observations
- Questions people ask
Over time, you’ll build a library of ideas that makes content creation much easier.
What I’ve Learned About Content Ideas
A few years ago, I thought successful content creators had some endless supply of creativity.
What I’ve learned is that most of them simply have better systems for collecting and organizing ideas.
Instead of relying on inspiration, they build lists.
Instead of starting from scratch, they pull from content they’ve already planned.
And instead of wondering what to create next, they already have a collection of ideas waiting for them.
That’s why I think content organization is one of the most underrated marketing skills a business owner can develop.
The more organized your ideas become, the easier content becomes.
